Introduction:: A runway of Wuhan Tianhe Airport was put into use in April 1995. As a result of the long service life of No. 1 runway and the connection channel, and frequency occurrence of pavement defects, the workload of pavement maintenance increases year by year. In December 2016, Wuhan Tianhe Airport entrusted a professional company to conduct a comprehensive testing of No. 1 runway and its related connection channels. According to the testing results, in addition to pavement defects and unsatisfactory flatness, other structural defects such as crack, corner fracture, subsidence, stagger and void occurred, severely affecting the use performance of the pavement. Another runway has limited sources for access connection channels. At present, only B1 and B12 end connection channels, B7 and B10 vertical connection channels, B4 and B9 rapid exit taxiways are available, totaling up to 6 connection channels and access runways.Referring to the testing conclusions and suggestions, No. 1 runway and its related connection channels were reinforced at the foundation necessarily based on the testing results, and the runway is paved with an asphalt surface course along the full length. Meanwhile, at the east side of the No. 1 runway, the connection channels are limited and arranged in a layout not properly enough to meet the requirements of safe and efficient operation. Therefore, it is necessary to overhaul the No.1 runway and its surrounding connection channels in Tianhe Airport, and optimize the layout of connection channels at the east side to ensure the success of the 7th CISM Military World Games and show the international image of Wuhan to the world. Therefore, Hubei Airport Group set the mind to overhaul the No. 1 runway of Tianhe Airport. Tianhe Airport No. 1 Runway is one of the largest runways in 4F airports of China (75m wide, 3,400m long). 7 pavers, 11 double-drum vibratory road rollers and 5 rubber tire road rollers were mobilized to work at the same time.The project included 3 asphalt courses for runway with total construction area of 948,900m2 and asphalt consumption of 130,000t. In this project, about 120,000t of asphalt mixtures were consumed. In the site, 2 sets of 4000 asphalt & concrete mixing stations were erected to output about 400t of qualified mixture every hour, and about 5,000t of mixture every 12h.
